due to web host shit (my fault) ive lost my self-hosted hubzilla instance. i dont mind too much, because i wasn’t really using it all too often, and didn’t feel like i had any real followers. but its still a bit of a pain in the ass. i might try self-hosting again, or i might just return to using a fediverse platform run by somebody else. haven’t decided yet.

in case like One person wonders why its gone, its my fault. ive taken it down. thats why its gone.

Spoilers ahead!

I played Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice for the first time this year (2023). I slept on it for the normal reasons. Finding Yamazaki’s writing usually less compelling, not enjoying Duel Destinies that much, and finding the Khura’in kingdom premise to be a silly retcon. But I’ve played it now. And it was pretty good. The second strongest Yamazaki game (I Am A Ace Attorney Investigations 2 fan) and actually a pretty good time, even if I thought it ran out of steam by the end. Lets get into it.

I also didn’t avoid spoilers for the game before playing it. I knew things like broad strokes of Apollo’s New Backstory before playing. I’ve also beaten every other Ace Attorney game, including the spinoffs. This article is written assuming you already have a handle on the series, I’ve been writing like it already so.

6-1 The Foreign Turnabout

please give me a whole tray of peas'

the name puns in this game are going to fucking kill me

Pees’lubn Andistan’dhin is a great episode villian though. his character gimmick of turning from a hippie music guy into a death metal guy is seriously fun

I guess id technically rank it a mid-tier opening case, but that sounds dismissive. But I’m just saying its no 3-5, it doesn’t reach the highest heights of the series. mid-tier (positive).

6-2 The Magical Turnabout

Trucy gets cancelled

I would not cancel Trucy Wright, even if she committed a murder. She deserves a little murder, as a treat.

The case seems very reverent of Troupe Gramarye, when the entirety of Apollo Justice was about outlining why they were dogshit lol. At least Roger Retinz is a suitability huge piece of shit, deserving of the Gramarye name. Taking down Retinz was fun. But overall, the case is mid. Mid by ace attorney terms, so it’s fun, but I think its more fun to say “Trucy gets cancelled”.

The games politics show their age kind of here. I think their age is shown even more later in the game.

I loved cross examining the magic trick.

6-3 The Rite of Turnabout

good night sweet prince

This was my favourite case in the game. I loved this shit.

Like many people, I was very disappointed in Maya’s redesign. She has a more mature face and proportions, but generally dresses and acts the same as she did as a teenager. Ema, a good aged design, is even in the same case. Its like the game is accidentally comparing what a good aged-up design and a bad one look like. Whoops.

The case seems to talk like Maya and Ema already know each other. Which is fine, I don’t recall them meeting before, but I can read between the lines. I guess I will take this piece of promotional artwork as canon and their first meeting, which is awesome i love this one.

Maya’s into a new Steel Samurai bootleg called the Plumbed Punisher, which is so funny to me. Its like somebody who likes The Simpsons getting really into The Samsonadzes. Its so good I love it.

I’m so glad Phoenix has adopted Rayfa, the two are so good together.

Maya channeling Tahrust Inmee (these name puns are going to kill me) is one of the case setpieces of all time. Its legendary. Its so fucking funny. Tahrust first enjoys having hair, then takes his (Maya’s) shirt off and contorts his body into pretzel poses while talking. Its so good.

It honestly touches on issues PW hasn’t touched on since DL-6, and I think its interesting. Ace Attorney 1 asks the question of “even if the woo police used was real, would it even be good”? A story even more about dead men telling lies to protect their loved ones is something that hasn’t been dealt with since Gregory Edgeworth, and its great to see it be given on-screen focus. Its one of the most tragic cases in the series, all while the goofy-ass Tahrust Inmee channeling is still happening.

You’d think I’d have an opinion on the new prosecutor, Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, by now. But I don’t. He fills his narrative role and is ok to bounce off. But meh.

6-4 Stories tellimng

Knowledge is knowing the sexy clown is in this one. Wisdom is knowing the hot girl here is Kisegawa.

There’s narrative momentum after 6-3 which should have been capitalised on. I usually like the breather cases in the Ace Attorney series a lot, but this is a bad place to give the player a breather case.

fuckin YEARS after this game’s release, Geiru Toneido became a meme for being a sexy clown. I want it to be known her boobs have a boing sound effect.

people who’ve played this game know the real hot girl in the case is Ms Kisegawa.

i kinda liked Simon Blackquill here (I did not like him in Duel Destinies). but christ dude stop treating Athena like a child, fuck you

I hate the defendant, Bucky Whet. I’m sick of watching him almost vomit. I think he deserves the death penalty.

6-5 Turnabout Revolution

poopoo peepee

God we can’t just have nice things. Its hard to explain, but I found every big idea here fell flat. It was a bit bland, a bit flavourless, meant to have a huge impact but I felt nothing. Can’t explain it.

Wow, this certainly is a game about politics from ≤2016 (Paul Atishon)

Dhurke was raising so many death flags from the word go, but I guess you raise a lot of death flags if you’re already dead.

I can’t believe we’re figuring out who the real villain is Ga’ran because she’s wearing a top with low cleavage. she would have gotten away with it if she kept her tits covered, smh smh.

I used a guide for the perceive sections. I don’t give a fuck, I hate perceive.

I thought I’d have more new things to say about Datz Are’bal and especially about Nahyuta Sahdmadhi now, but I don’t. A lot happened with Nahyuta Sahdmadhi’s character but I don’t care.

rayfa was so bbrave.

Why is Maya even here. She didn’t have to be. nO REALLY. Bringing Maya back as a character was a big decision. and it made an argument for itself being worth it in 6-3! But then, Maya was instantly left with nothing to do! What was the point!!

wow! it was lucky of Jove Justice to die within a meter of a mirror.

I thought I’d have stronger opinions about the retcons, but. i dont. games not new. it feels like a done deal, not a fresh outrage to get mad about. But I can’t bring myself to feel more emotional than “yeah, that happened”.

Wow, this certainly is a game about politics from ≤2016 (Khura’in Revolution)

I traded my N64 in for a few Wii games. This was the 00’s, the N64 wasn’t a Classic Collectable yet, although it had gone up in price. Got a few hundred, you know.

One of the games I spent my money on was The Simpsons Game.

Boxart of The Simpsons Game for Wii.

this The Simpsons Game.

I knew The Simpsons Game would be a mediocre 3D platformer, but I thought yanno, it would keep me busy for a bit. But all The Simpsons Game made me feel was “Mmm… I’d be happier with the N64”.

A gif of Mr Burns from the Simpsons. It is captioned "Mmm... I'd be happier with the N64".

frinkiac.com best site for simpsons gidfs frinkiac.com

This FUCKING though based on a fucking Simpsons joke is why I’ve hoarded my old physical media ever since.

But there’s something depressing about having a wall of Classic Games I don’t play or engage with any more. I’m not doing hashtag Media Preservation, all these videogames are already well preserved by other people. I don’t own any rare or obscure games – they’re all bestselling, ubiquitous, popular. I’m not keeping them in preservation condition, I’m keeping them on the shelf not putting them in the fridge. I think its sad these game discs don’t get played any more. Some fucking leak of empathy has me feeling sorry for the games who just sit around doing nothing. Sometimes, I want to give them away so I know somebody is still playing them. But moreso, I worry that if I give them away, I’ll be giving my collection away to another hoarder, and i’d miss them.

Some people who sell of get rid of their old items spend their whole time missing them. I’m not sure how much happier I would actually have been if I kept the n64. Like, some times I think “it would be nice to have around” but oh well. I know how to download N64 games in minecraft, I’m good when I actually want to play one.

I haven’t got the Wii out in a few years, took this photo last time I did. I guess its nice to have one around every once in a while but i’m not really playing it. I always think “Mmm… I’d be happier with the N64” but I don’t know. Would I feel very different if I sold the Wii? I think i’ve owned it too long to sell now. I’m hording it until it all breaks and doesn’t work, I guess. or unless I need like a little more room, like a tiny amount of more room.

I guess it sucks if you sell your old shit, sucks if you keep it. who cares

Second hand stores are great.

I remember the staff of the store were playing Nirvana’s In Utero through the speakers, once. The one employee who rapidly dropped everything and ran out the back to skip the song when Rape Me came on was so funny (it’s a good thing they did though, imagine playing that song over the speakers of a shop, oof). Hope they’re having a good life.

Q: How is stylus gaming different than finger touchscreen gaming?
A: Stylus.

The difference between stylus gaming and touchscreen gaming is the difference between painting with a brush, and painting with your fingers. Fingerpainting is super rad, but hoo-boy, using a brush is a whole different kind of awesome!

A stylus can demand more precision of the player, require less hand movement, and use smaller UI elements. Human fingers are large, imprecise, prone to obfuscating game elements, and its very taxing to wave your entire hand for demanding gameplay.

Trauma Centre is a game with terrible politics where you need to zap cartoon viruses inside the human body with lasers. It rules, and it could never work with finger touchscreens. It’s too fast and precise.

Professor Layton contains beautiful backgrounds, where you can tap hotspots to find flavour text and hint tokens. In a finger touchscreen scenario, the game is playable, but your fingers would obfuscate the UI elements you’re attempting to interact with. It would suit a point-and-click style with a mouse better than fingers.

The Nintendo DS is the home of several adventure game classics. A point-and-click genre moving to a stylus based input is just such a natural fit. And you don’t really need to do anything differently than a mouse point-and-click. There’s a lot of great adventure games for finger touchscreens too, but they usually need to design their hotspot UI around that input method and make compromises to it.

Drawn to Life is a generic platform game with a gimmick – You yourself can draw the appearance of many in-game elements, including your protagonist.

Illustration mechanics and gimmicks are a natural fit for stylus games, and appear in many DS games. Drawn to Life is just the most obvious example. WarioWare DIY would be another great example. Animal Crossing: Wild World lets players illustrate their own custom outfits for the player character. Kirby: Canvas Curse is a more subtle usage, where you illustrate lines for Kirby to move across. There’s similar minigames in Super Mario 64 DS where you interact with Mario by illustration. Or the DS Zelda games, where drawing on the game’s maps, and drawing paths for AI controlled characters (Zelda) to follow, is a neat mechanic that adds a nice twist to the Zelda formula.

on the other hand.

I get why people like finger touchscreens. You don’t have to own a stylus – and a stylus is a tiny piece of plastic which loves to go missing. Whereas your fingers are Just Right There.

I am aware there are stylus’ available for finger touchscreens. And I do own and use some! and they go missing A Lot!! But these stylus mimic human fingers, by having large wide grippy tips. And the games I’m playing them with are clearly built around fingers anyway, so it’s just not the same.

but yeah in the end i

i do miss stylus gaming. *sigh* Touchscreening with fingers isn’t the same.

anyway please leave some comments. let me know your fave stylus game, or if you also miss this input method. or just say anything I live for comment’s

Thanks to LParchive, which I stole screenshots off of because of course I did. Specifically, thanks to World‘s Trauma Centre LP, Lyrax‘s Kirby: Canvas Curse LP, and Dragonatrix/Lotus Aura‘s Professor Layton LP. Good stuff, you three rock. <3

The Return of The Return of The Return of The Return of Adelaide Parker

Adelaide Parker is my webcomic, which I last worked on from 2015 to 2017.

I wanted to just create something I’d enjoy. Pure author appeal, and people who like the same things I do will find and enjoy it. But when I re-read Adelaide Parker now, I don’t enjoy it. It’s kind of dull, really.

The “connective tissue” parts of stories are boring (for me) to create. I had big setpieces in mind when I outlined the story, and handwaved connecting them as a problem for future me. So when they came, it noticed connecting them together sucks. Turns out that I just want to get to the good bits, too.

A reboot wouldn’t help. I just said connective tissue sucked, the prospect of redoing it all and re-introducing my characters introductions sounds so bad to me. I don’t even know what i’d do different. I could probably panel it better idk, but the broad strokes would be so alike. And since I already have the setup done, I think I need to not mess and just keep going.

The story was planned with an ending, and it’s still an ending I like. I want to get to that ending. I want to finish my comic.

But I am going to do a remaster and tweak.

Then I will start working on new pages. This year, and hopefully, in the next few months. I want to get the old archives remastered and online first, and then follow with new pages.

I thought I was big enough to handle difficult, mature themes. Which are still going to be A Thing, I’m not going to simplify it down. I can’t, because the story doesn’t handle it’s themes well at all. It’s already so bad, I can’t make it worse lol. I also kept adding foreshadowing on foreshadowing. I can’t cut that down without going full reboot mode, so I will pay it off in the ending at least.

I also want to work within my limitations. I’ll estimate i’ve got another two years and 50 pages in me, and try to end the story in that space. This might not seem like a lot, but its the existing pagecount of the comic. Half the comic should be more than enough time to wrap it up.

The story is set in 2010. When I committed to illustrating it, it was 2015. I thought my planned story would take a few years to complete. It wasn’t too weird or obsolete to set my story a few years in the past.

Now it’s 2022. 2010 is over a decade gone. The world, and my understanding of it, have changed a lot. It’s going to be hard to write for a time period which is so near, but so far. I want to rise to the challenge.

also why are all my characters cis. why would i make this
